The Thai name of this fish is the receipt. Pla kat means fighting or biting fish, and the whole species was a sport before it was an ornament; one cousin in the genus is named imbellis, Latin for unwarlike, which is the taxonomists’ idea of a joke. This table holds 62 receipts like those: the Thai and regional lane, the fin and color vocabulary with the trade flags on the rows, and the wild species epithets.
62 real names, five registers, one rule. The science lane rows the genus, the species and the pla kat receipt, contested stories flagged on the row. The Thai lane rows the country of the fish, its rivers, and two real Thai given names. The fin lane rows the documented breeder vocabulary with the trade said so, the color lane the gem and light words, and the water lane the tank words. Nothing invented; the Mustard Gas row tells its own trademark.
Grouped by register. The register stays on every row.

The fighting fish, in prose
The sport is documented; the details deserve their honesty flags.Village matches with wagers on pla kat were reported from Siam in the nineteenth century, and the modern show betta descends from those fighting lines, reselected for finnage rather than fight. The story that the king licensed the matches and kept his own stable is tradition more than document, and the story that Regan named the genus Betta for a warrior group called the Bettah is repeated everywhere and sourced thinly; both flags sit on the rows above. The fish was kept in jars in the fighting days, which is history, not advice.
The neighbor page
The Japanese fish registers row elsewhere, and this page does not poach them.Japanese fish names rows the koi variety register and the kingyo goldfish standards, script-checked, and the betta page keeps the Southeast Asian and international register: the Thai words, the rivers, the trade vocabulary. The goldfish namessibling keeps the same split from its side. The wider grid starts at the pet names hub.

The trade vocabulary, said plainly
Halfmoon, Crowntail, Dragonscale: these are the words of a real craft, and the rows say so. The fin types and color lines of the betta world are documented breeder vocabulary, named by the people who built them: the halfmoon standard of the early 1990s, the Indonesian crowntail of the same decade, the trademarked Mustard Gas line whose name the trade still honors. This page rows them as vocabulary with receipts, not as invented names, and the trade flags travel with the rows.
How to pick one
Name the fish you see, because the fish changes. The marble gene repaints some bettas for their whole lives, so a fry-day name about color dates badly; the Thai lane and the science lane hold up better. Two beats carries across a room, and the flare at feeding time will answer to anything said warmly and often. The full procedure is the how to name a petguide, and the pet name generator runs the lanes live.
The surface matter
One receipt matters more than the names: this fish breathes air. The labyrinth organ lets a betta gulp at the surface, which is why it survives water other fish would not, and why a lid with air space matters as much as the heater. The Bubble Nest row is the other half of the same story: the male builds a nest of air and spit at the surface and guards the eggs under it. The surface is the betta’s address; every name in the table gets called there.
Betta fish names questions, answered
What does pla kat mean?
Fighting or biting fish in Thai, and it is the honest receipt of the whole hobby. In the nineteenth century, villagers in Siam fought wild pla kat in matches with wagers, the court is said to have collected and regulated the fish, and the modern show animal descends from those fighting lines, reselected for fins instead of fight. The words is said matter: the court story is tradition more than document, and the pla kat row keeps the distinction.
Can you keep two bettas together?
Two males, no; the species’ name is the receipt of why. Male Siamese fighting fish were bred from fish that defended territory, and two males in one tank will flare, bite, and injure each other. A male with a female is breeding-only and supervised. The female group tank, the sorority, is the debated middle: keepers run them in large, heavily planted tanks and the honest ones report that it works until the day it does not. The row above keeps the debate on it.
Do bettas really live in puddles?
No, and the puddle story is the myth worth correcting. Wild bettas live in rice paddies, floodplains, ditches and pond edges: shallow water, yes, but warm, vast and connected, which is a different thing from a puddle. The rice-paddy receipt is why the modern standard is a heated, filtered, cycled tank with air to breathe at the surface; the labyrinth organ row above explains why the surface matters. The jar was history; the bowl is not a home.
Why is there no koi or kingyo on this page?
Because the Japanese fish registers row on their own page, and this site never rows a name twice. The koi variety register, Kohaku through Kawarimono, and the kingyo goldfish standards row on Japanese fish names, script-checked; this page rows the Southeast Asian and international register of the betta world instead. The goldfish sibling of this page keeps the same split from its side.
Where this data comes from.Taxonomy follows standard ichthyology (Regan’s 1909 genus and 1910 species; Betta imbellis, B. smaragdina, B. mahachaiensis 2012). The pla kat fighting history follows published accounts of the Siamese sport, with the court tradition and the Bettah naming flagged as thinly sourced. Trade vocabulary (halfmoon, crowntail, the Mustard Gas trademark) follows the documented breeder record. Gem and light etymologies follow standard dictionaries. Where every name's receipt comes from →
